About Bates numbering

Bates numbering gives every page of a set of documents a unique identifier, such as ACME000001, ACME000002 and so on. It is standard in legal discovery and audits, where each page has to be referenced without ambiguity.

Numbering continues across files: add the documents in order and the second file picks up where the first ended.

Use it to add Bates stamps to PDFs, number legal documents for discovery, or label every page of an exhibit set.

How to use it

  1. Choose PDFs, one or several, and put them in order.
  2. Set the Prefix, Suffix, First number and how many Digits to pad to.
  3. Pick the Position, usually bottom right.
  4. Press Add Bates numbers and download the numbered files as a ZIP.

Good to know

  • Zero-padding (for example 6 digits) keeps numbers the same width and sorting correctly.
  • Numbers are placed on the visible page, so they sit correctly on rotated and cropped pages.
