About PDF to text

PDF to text pulls out the text of a PDF and saves it as a plain .txt file. Use it to paste a report into an email, feed a document into another program, or keep a lightweight searchable copy.

Use it to convert PDF to TXT, copy all the text from a PDF, or extract text for an email, a spreadsheet or another program.

How to use it

  1. Choose the PDF.
  2. Press Get text.
  3. Download the .txt file.

Good to know

  • Only real text is extracted. A scanned PDF has none until you run OCR on it first.
  • Layout such as columns and tables is reduced to plain lines of text.

Questions and answers

Why is the text file empty?

The PDF is probably a scan, which contains pictures of text rather than text. Run OCR first, then extract.

Does it keep formatting?

No. A .txt file holds plain text only, so fonts, colours and layout are not kept.

Can I extract text from a protected PDF?

If it opens with a password, enter it first. If copying is restricted and you are allowed to change the file, remove the restriction with Unlock PDF.

Is the text sent anywhere?

No. Extraction runs entirely in your browser.
